Food OIT

Food Allergies are a Growing Epidemic

More than 15 million Americans, approximately 5% of adults and 8% of children, have a food allergy and nearly 40 percent of these children have already experienced a severe or life-threatening reaction. Studies have revealed living with food allergies, strict avoidance of the allergen and the fear of accidental exposure, increases anxiety and has a negative impact on a child’s quality of life as well as the family’s quality of life.

Food Allergy Treatment is Available

There is good news! Strict avoidance of problem foods is no longer the only way to prevent a reaction. Many promising new treatments are available. Among the currently available successful treatment options with us are food Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) and Oral Immunotherapy (OIT). A slow gradual introduction of food allergen is proven to result in desensitization and increase the threshold of reactivity from cross contamination.

Leaders in Food SLIT and Food OIT

Since our practice began treating food-allergic patients in 2000, we have been active with Oral Food Challenges (OFC). We added food SLIT and food OIT as treatment options in 2015. Our office and team have successfully introduced foods through OFC and with food SLIT and OIT desensitization to over 5,000 food-allergic patients, adults and children, with over 6,000 foods!

Our team of experts has a combined experience of 20+ years of successfully treating food allergies through oral immunotherapy.

Allergens we treat include: Peanuts, all tree nuts (almonds, cashew, walnut, hazelnut, pistachio, pecan, brazil nuts, macadamia, pine nuts), milk, soy, eggs, sesame, chickpea, wheat, lentils, sunflower, South Asian Lentils (Dals), and more.

When Others Can’t Help, WE CAN!

Each patient is different and requires an individualized treatment plan.

Our OIT family includes: national and international patients, children of doctors who trust that we can help, adults and children who lost hope because they had been told they are not candidates, and even families who have been told they “failed OIT” are referred to us.

We are grateful to help all of these patients and families who did not give up and had the courage to continue to seek treatment and relief, and found it with us.

Desensitization and OIT Success Happens Here Every Day

Desensitization means that a person can consume a significant amount of a problem food without experiencing a reaction, the majority of our patients achieve this in just 6 months, yes, 6 months!

The elation of the families who experience this describe it as “life changing”, and “an amazing relief”. We take tremendous joy and pride in having helped change and improve the lives of so many!

In order to stay safe, patients continue eating these foods until tolerance is developed. The desensitization or tolerance has helped large numbers of people with food allergies, protecting them against potentially fatal reactions. During OIT, the food is administered slowly, in small but steadily increasing doses, until the patient is desensitized to it. Clinical trials have demonstrated 80-95% success rate, if done properly and administered in a controlled setting.

We have a dedicated experienced team, resources, and controlled settings to help families with food allergies who plan to join our growing number of OIT patients. We are here for you and with you for the duration.

Safety is #1

The number one goal is safety, to reduce the risk of anaphylaxis from accidental exposure. Upon completion of OIT, patients can eat foods that contain the allergenic food without fear or worry. This could be a reality for you or your family. Learn more about OIT and if you or your child is a candidate for this life-changing treatment.
